What is Italian Marble? — The Complete India Buyer’s Guide
Italian marble is natural stone quarried from the mountains of Italy — primarily from the Apuan Alps in Carrara, Tuscany, and the Verona region of Veneto. It is considered the finest marble in the world due to its extraordinary crystalline structure, pure mineral composition, and the deep geological history of the Italian Alps that produces veining patterns found nowhere else on earth.
In India, Italian marble has been used for luxury homes, five-star hotels, temples, and landmark corporate spaces for decades. At RMS Stonex, Kishangarh — India’s marble capital — we have been importing and supplying authentic Italian marble directly since 1978. Every slab is personally inspected at source and carries our quality guarantee.
Why Italian Marble is Different from Indian Marble
Indian buyers often ask why Italian marble costs more than domestic varieties. The difference comes down to five factors:
| Factor | Italian Marble | Indian Marble |
|---|---|---|
| Veining | Dramatic, flowing, unique per slab | Subtle, more uniform |
| Density | 2.65–2.72 g/cm³ — very dense | 2.50–2.65 g/cm³ |
| Polish durability | Mirror finish lasts 20–30 years | Requires repolishing after 5–8 years |
| Colour consistency | Consistent across batches | Can vary between batches |
| Prestige value | Increases property resale value | Moderate impact on resale |

Where is Italian Marble Used — Applications in Indian Homes
Italian marble is suitable for nearly every surface in a luxury home or commercial space:
- Living room flooring — Statuario and Calacatta are the most popular choices for large-format living room floors. The natural veining creates a seamless, flowing look across the entire floor.
- Kitchen countertops — Calacatta, Carrara, and Patagonia are ideal for kitchen islands and countertops. Heat resistant up to 200°C. Seal annually to prevent staining from acidic foods.
- Bathroom walls and floors — All our Italian marble is suitable for wet areas. Michelangelo and Volakas are particularly popular for luxury bathroom feature walls and shower niches.
- Staircases — Botticino, Crema Marfil, and white varieties are the top choices for staircases due to their slip-resistant honed finish option and durability underfoot.
- Feature walls and TV panels — Black Marquina, Patagonia, and Onyx (backlit) create dramatic feature walls that serve as architectural focal points.
- Hotel lobbies and commercial spaces — Our commercial supply includes bookmatched slabs for grand lobby installations. RMS Stonex has supplied marble to Reliance, Dabur, PVR, and 500+ corporate clients.

Frequently Asked Questions — Italian Marble
What is the price of Italian marble per square foot in India in 2026?
Italian marble price in India ranges from ₹200 to ₹3,000 per square foot depending on the type, thickness, and finish. Entry-level options like Carrara and Vietnam White start at ₹3500–₹520/sqft. Mid-range options like Michelangelo and Statuario cost ₹250–₹800/sqft. Premium varieties like Calacatta and Patagonia range from ₹500 to ₹2,000/sqft. Prices above are ex-warehouse Kishangarh; GST @18% and delivery charges are additional.
Which Italian marble is best for home flooring in India?
For flooring in Indian homes, Statuario, Michelangelo, and Carrara are the top choices. They balance visual impact with durability and are available in large slab formats for minimal joints. For living rooms, Statuario’s bold grey veining on white background is the most popular. For bedrooms, Carrara’s softer veining creates a more restful atmosphere. For high-traffic areas, choose 18mm or 20mm thickness for extra durability.
How to identify genuine Italian marble vs fake or artificial marble?
Genuine Italian marble can be identified by:
(1) Coolness on touch — natural stone is always cooler than room temperature.
(2) Weight — a genuine marble slab is very heavy (approx. 27 kg per sq ft for 18mm).
(3) Unique veining — no two natural marble slabs are identical; if all slabs have the same pattern, it is artificial.
(4) Acid test — apply a drop of vinegar to an inconspicuous spot; genuine marble reacts slightly (fizzes). Ask your supplier for a certificate of origin. All our Italian marble comes with country-of-origin documentation.
Does Italian marble require sealing? How often?
Yes. We recommend sealing Italian marble once a year with a professional penetrating marble sealer. New installation should be sealed before grouting and again after 30 days. Annual sealing protects against oil, juice, and water-based stains, particularly important for kitchen countertops and bathroom floors. Polished surfaces are less porous than honed finishes and may only need sealing every 18–24 months.
What is the difference between Statuario and Calacatta marble?
Both are premium white Italian marbles but differ in veining and price. Statuario has bold, dramatic grey veining on a bright white background — more contrast, more dramatic look. Calacatta has warmer, gold-grey veining that is more sparse and irregular — considered rarer and more prestigious. Calacatta is typically 2–3× the price of Statuario. For most Indian homes, Statuario offers better value; Calacatta is preferred for ultra-luxury projects with no budget constraint.
Is Italian marble slippery? Is it safe for flooring?
Polished Italian marble can be slippery when wet, particularly in bathrooms. We recommend: honed finish (matte) for bathroom floors and outdoor areas — it reduces slip risk while retaining the natural marble look. For living rooms and dry areas, polished finish is perfectly safe. Anti-slip coatings can also be applied after installation. Our team can advise on the right finish for each area during your consultation.
What thickness of Italian marble slab should I choose?
Standard thicknesses: 16mm for walls and vertical surfaces (lighter, easier to install, lower cost). 18mm for most flooring applications — the most popular choice in India. 20mm for heavy-traffic areas like hotel lobbies, commercial floors, and staircases. For kitchen countertops, 20mm is recommended for structural stability. Custom thicknesses up to 30mm available on order.
Can I get samples before ordering Italian marble?
Yes. We offer free marble samples (up to 3 varieties) for orders above a minimum quantity. Samples are 30×30 cm pieces of the actual slab stock, not catalogue photos. This lets you see the real veining, colour, and finish in your home lighting conditions before committing. Request your free samples here.
What is the minimum order quantity for Italian marble?
There is no minimum order quantity for residential buyers. For single-room or single-bathroom requirements, you can order as little as 2000–3000 sq ft. Bulk and commercial orders of 5000+ sqft qualify for volume discounts. We also accept contractor and architect accounts with special trade pricing. Get a custom quote for your project.
How is Italian marble packaged and shipped to avoid breakage?
All slabs are packed in wooden crates with foam padding between each slab to prevent scratching and chipping during transit. Fragile and bookmatched slabs receive additional bubble wrap and corner protection. We use dedicated marble transport vehicles (not general cargo) for large orders. Our packaging has a less than 0.5% damage rate across 10,000+ deliveries annually. Full insurance is available on request.
What is the GST rate on Italian marble in India?
Italian marble slabs are taxed at 18% GST under HSN code 2515. Tiles and processed marble may attract different rates. For detailed GST information, see our guide: GST on Italian Marble Slabs and Blocks.
